South Gate Civic Center
The City of South Gate is a blue-collar working class community situated southeast of downtown Los Angeles. The project site sits within the Civic Center complex adjacent to South Gate City Hall.
The project includes three different aspects. The first phase includes adaptive re-use and renovation of a 1930’s era Federal Style Library Building which will be transformed into a Community Center to house a History Museum, Art Museum and a multi-purpose meeting room to accommodate among other civic functions a Senior Meals Program. The second phase includes relocation of a 1920’s bungalow to the same Civic Center site adjacent to the Community Center. Once it is moved, the residence will undergo renovation that will transform it into a museum which will contain the memoirs and family history of its former occupant, Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg. The third phase includes addition of various site amenities surrounding these two structures, including a civic plaza, pedestrian arcades, landscaping and parking.
Both structures will be outfitted with all new mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems and upgraded to become ADA compliant.
Design was completed in 1999.
