Residential : Addition & Remodel

Soderling Residence

Back to project list

This residence sits on a moderately sloped and heavily wooded site near Woodinville, Washington. The Owners wanted to update the front elevation and entry of this 1970’s structure and provide much needed storage space and recreation room. The Owner’s are passionate about gardening and have developed a variety of experiences on the 3-acre property over the last twenty years.

The program for the tri-level residence included the following elements; a new and enlarged Entry and Porch at the middle or Living Room level, expansion of a small Guest Room at the rear of the house on the lower level into what was the two-car Garage to become one large Recreation / Game Room w/ wet bar and storage, creation of a new two-car Garage and Auto Court in front of the existing residence but one floor below dictated by the sloped site, providing a Roof Terrace over the new Garage that would visually and physically extend the new Recreation / Game Room to the exterior and finally two new stairs one internal to accommodate access to the residence from the Garage and the other external and allows visitor access from the Auto Court to the Entry.

The Roof Terrace over the Garage was designed with a cedar trellis that fronts the auto court and crosses over the exterior entry stair to form a stylized “Torii” gate. The Roof Terrace allows the Owner’s to enjoy the fruits of their gardening labors as they are surrounded by the forest of trees and plantings. The trees also provided inspiration for the “multi-stemmed branches” or posts emanating from a concrete bollard around which the external stair winds that in turn supports the new overhanging entry/porch roof.

Construction was completed in 2002.
